Sweet chestnut variegata
Castanea sativa variegata
Description
Castanea sativa variegata also called Sweet chestnut variegata is a very little known and rare tree. Although its fruits are edible, it is mainly cultivated for its very ornamental aspect. Its melliferous flowering attracts many butterflies and foraging insects in the spring.
Castanea sativa variegata easily reaches 8-10 meters in adulthood and spans 5-6 meters. Its shiny green leaves variegated with white are serrated and oblong in shape, they stand out particularly under the rays of the sun thus bringing out the whiteness, which makes it a luminous ornamental tree. It blooms in June, in long clusters of small, highly decorative white flowers that in the fall give birth to edible chestnuts protected by a thorny bug.
The Sweet chestnut variegata is a vigorous and easy to grow tree that thrives in both sun and partial shade, it is planted in a deep, well-drained hole in a mixture of slightly acidic soil and compost. Resistant to diseases, Castanea sativa variegata tolerates negative temperatures down to -20 ° C.
Exceptional tree to highlight in isolation or in alignment to border an alley, leaving 8 to 10 m between each tree.
