Description
The Quercus ilex or Holly oak or Holm oak, native to the south of France and Corsica, is a majestic tree which has a great longevity: it lives between 200 and 2000 years. Its leaves are dark green and shiny on their upper side and downy on their underside. The evergreen foliage is also leathery and prickly, strongly resembling that of holly. The flowers of the Holly oak, large soft green catkins, appear in April-May and come to decorate it beautifully. Small acorns followed in September-October, used to feed pigs in Corsica and Spain. The short, twisted trunk of Quercus Ilex is a pretty gray-brown color and its bark peels over time. It is one of the most used trees in truffle culture.
Able to withstand down to -15°C, Holly Oak is however not made for very harsh winters and prefers milder climates where it is very commonly used to stabilize coastal dunes. Once adult, it can reach 20 meters high and 15 meters wide and has a beautiful rounded shape.
Quercus ilex can be planted in any soil, it tolerates limestone and drought well. Installed in isolation, it will take on the scale it wishes and will become one of the most beautiful subjects in your garden. It is also possible to plant it in a free hedge where it will adapt perfectly.
