Description
The Italian alder is a pyramid-shaped tree ranging from 8 to 18 metres in height. Its leaves are one of its greatest assets: heart-shaped, they persist well into winter when most other trees are already bare. Alnus cordata forms male and female flowers, the latter turning into green and then dark brown cones in late summer.
By planting a Italian alder, you can be sure of attracting many birds to your garden: they are very fond of its seeds as well as all the insects that this tree shelters.
Alnus cordata has few cultivation requirements, it likes damp soil like other alder species and is often used to maintain riverbanks, but it also tolerates dry soil. It grows very quickly, is extremely wind resistant and can withstand temperatures as low as -35°C.
Alnus cordata is an unusual tree with leaves and will look great in any garden.
