The Northern red oak, or Quercus Rubra, is a majestic tree species, native to North America. This emblematic tree, imported from the Americas in 1724, is appreciated for the quality and robustness of its wood. Very hardy (-25°C) and resistant to drought and pollution, it can live from 200 to 500 years. It is an ideal tree for a spacious and long-lasting exterior!

The Northern red oak is a fast-growing tree: it measures 20 metres in circumference for 20 to 30 metres in height, at a rate of 1 metre per year for the first 10 years. Its imposing silvery-grey trunk, which is smooth at first but deeply cracked after 20 years, has a spreading habit and reddish-brown branches. Its deciduous foliage consists of large, dark green, strongly lobed leaves, 12 to 22 cm long, which turn brownish red in autumn. When it flowers in April-May, Quercus Rubra is adorned with long, hanging catkins, followed by elongated 2 cm acorns with an almost flat cup.

The Northern red oak is easy to grow and undemanding: it adapts easily to all types of environment and climate. It prefers a shady exposure and a deep, acid to neutral, light and fresh soil. It should be planted between October and December, in a hole that has been cleared of any stones or plant debris and enriched with an organic mixture. The Quercus Rubra needs to be tutored and watered abundantly for the first three years, to guide its growth and facilitate its rooting.
