Paulownia Tomentosa
Description
Paulownia tomentosa, a beautiful ornamental and shade tree.
The Princesstree or Paulownia Tomentosa comes from Asia. It is a very elegant tree, which stands out for its broad heart-shaped leaves and its spectacular decorative flowering. Its clusters of lilac blue flowers, grouped in conical panicles, appear in spring before the leaves. The scent they emit is reminiscent of the violet. It is at the beginning of May that the flower buds of Paulownia Tomentosa, born at the end of the summer, open and the flowers bloom. The leaves of the Princesstree then appear, they are remarkable for their size (15 to 25 cm in diameter) and covered with small downy hairs.
Plant your Paulownia Tomentosa in a cool, well-drained soil, protected from strong winds and in a sunny position. Very hardy, very resistant to cold (up to -23 ° C), you will see it grow rapidly, and very quickly it will serve as a parasol.
The Princesstree bears very well to be pruned. Each spring, remove the lower branches when they are young to favor an aesthetic branch. Folded each year close to the ground, it forms a shrub with vigorous stems that will give leaves of exceptional size (up to 60 cm in diameter), creating a surprising tropical atmosphere. But in return, you sacrifice the flowers which are born on the branches of 2 years and more.
When the Princesstree is still young, its vegetation is almost completely eliminated each winter and it leaves the stump each spring, this until its third year of growth where it begins to make a trunk.
