Description
Prunus avium Plena, also known by the common name of Double Cherry Blossom, belongs to the Rosaceae family. This ornamental deciduous tree originated in Europe and was introduced to France in the early 1700s. It reaches an adult size of 8 to 12 meters in height and about 9 meters in width. Its crown, semi-open, is rounded, and it has a longevity of between 50 and 80 years.
The foliage of Prunus avium Plena is composed of oval and toothed leaves, dark green, that turns orange-yellow in the fall. Its double flowers, bright white and honey-producing, measure 2 to 3 cm and bloom in abundance from late April to May, although they do not produce fruit. The bark of the tree, for its part, is reddish brown and shiny, adding an additional decorative touch.
In terms of cultivation, this ornamental cherry tree prefers exposure in full sun or partial shade and thrives in rich, well-drained, sandy, calcareous and not dry soil. Very rustic, it can withstand temperatures down to -24 ° C. Pruning is not generally necessary, except to remove dead or diseased branches.
This tree is very popular for ornamental purposes in gardens, parks and paths, thanks to its spectacular spring flowering. It is also suitable for planting in alignment along streets or paths, and can be enhanced when planted in isolation.
The advantages of the Double Cherry Blossom lie in its abundant and very decorative flowering in spring, its ease of cultivation and its adaptability to different types of soils and exposures. However, its sterile flowers do not produce fruit.
To maximize the growth and flowering of the Double Cherry Blossom, it is best to plant this tree in autumn or spring. Regular watering during the first year of planting is recommended, especially in case of drought. It is also beneficial to provide organic fertilizer in spring.
In summary, the Prunus avium Plena is an ornamental tree highly appreciated for its magnificent spring flowering. Easy to grow and adaptable, it is an excellent choice to beautify gardens and public spaces. Although it does not produce fruit, its spring beauty makes it a real ornamental asset.
