Description
Malus Tschonoskii, called Crab Apple Tschonoskii, is a species of decorative fruit tree native to Japan. It is distinguished by its straight trunk, its slender and pyramidal columnar shape, which make it an interesting architectural element in gardens.
One of the most appreciated characteristics of Malus Tschonoskii is its foliage. The leaves, almost white when budding, are medium green to greyish with a light gray reverse, they are oval and slightly downy. In autumn, they are adorned with magnificent warm colours, ranging from orange-yellow to copper and purple-red, thus offering a magical spectacle.
In May, the Crab Apple Tschonoskii is covered with white flowers, simple and delicate, 3 to 4 cm, gathered in corymbs. Although less abundant than that of some other ornamental apple trees, this flowering is nevertheless elegant and fragrant. The flowers are melliferous, thus attracting many pollinating insects.
The fruits, small in size, are rounded in shape, 2 to 3 cm, greenish yellow in colour tinged with red. They often persist on the tree all winter, providing an additional decorative touch.
Fast-growing, the Crab Apple Tschonoskii grows up to 8 - 10 m. Thanks to its narrow shape, it can be grown in modest-sized gardens.
The Crab Apple Tschonoskii is a hardy tree (-23° C) that adapts to different types of soil, provided that they are well drained and not too dry. It appreciates sunny or semi-shaded exposures. Planting is preferably done in autumn or spring, outside of frost periods.
This tree requires little maintenance. Light pruning can be done after flowering to maintain a compact shape. Watering should be regular the first year after planting, then more spaced out thereafter.
Ornamental apple trees, including Malus Tschonoskii, play an essential role in the pollination of fruit apple trees. Indeed, they pollinate all varieties of apple trees. It is therefore advisable to plant several varieties of apple trees in the same orchard to promote pollination.
The Crab Apple Tschonoskii is a remarkable decorative tree that will find its place in all gardens, isolated or in a row. Its elegant shape, colourful foliage and spring flowering make it an essential element of gardens. Do not hesitate to integrate it into your landscaping to enjoy its beauty and benefits.
