Lindera obtusiloba or more commonly Blunt-lobed spice bush is a deciduous shrub native to the forests and stream banks of eastern Asia. Its foliage is one of the main attractions, made up of 8 cm, irregularly trilobed leaves, which give off a pleasant scent when crushed. In early spring, before the leaves appear, the shrub displays yellow, starry, fragrant flowers, similar to those of Cornus mas, which attract pollinators and add visual interest to the garden. The flowers are followed by the formation of 8 mm red-brown spherical fruits on female plants. The oil extracted from its fruits is used as an anti-inflammatory in traditional medicine. In fall, the foliage turns a beautiful golden-yellow hue, adding a remarkable splash of colour to the garden.

Lindera obtusiloba can reach a height of 5 to 6 m and a width of 6 meters, forming a spreading and rounded habit. This shrub can withstand temperatures of around -15°C. The Blunt-lobed spice bush prefers partial shade and cool, drained and rich soil, with an acidic or neutral pH.

Lindera obtusiloba requires little maintenance once established, but it can benefit from light pruning to maintain its shape. It is ideal for creating focal points in shaded areas of the garden, in flower beds or free hedges. Its disease resistance and ease of cultivation make it an excellent choice for gardeners of all levels.
