Acer rufinerve, also called Grey-budded snake-bark-maple, is a small tree native to the mountainous forests of Japan, belonging to the Sapindaceae family. It is distinguished by its remarkable bark, green and streaked with white-gray, which earned it the nickname snakeskin maple. It is an ornamental tree which offers a striking spectacle in autumn, when its trilobed leaves are adorned with flamboyant colours ranging from orange to carmine red.

Grey-budded snake-bark-maple has a slender habit, which widens slightly with age. It can reach 8 to 10 meters in height, with a spread of 4 to 7 meters. Its leaves are soft green and textured, with three lobes ending in points. They measure 12 to 15 cm long by 10 cm wide and are arranged in opposite pairs on the branches. Flowering takes place in April-May and appears in the form of clusters of small yellow-green flowers. The fruits are winged samaras, grouped in pairs and hanging. They are decorative and persist for a long time on the tree.

Acer rufinerve appreciates acidic to neutral, fresh, but well-drained soil. It tolerates limestone, but fears soils that are too dry or too compact. It prefers a sunny to partial shade exposure. It withstands temperatures down to -23°C. Planting is preferably done in autumn or spring in slightly acidic soil composed of garden soil and heather compost, make a hole twice as wide as the root ball. You must water well after planting and mulch the base to maintain soil moisture. Pruning is not necessary except to remove dead or misplaced branches. Grey-budded snake-bark-maple is not very susceptible to diseases and parasites.

Grey-budded snake-bark-maple is an ideal tree for creating a focal point in a garden. It can be planted alone or in groups, on a lawn or in a flower bed. It can also be grown in a clump (several trunks) to multiply the visual effect of its striped bark. It goes well with other trees or shrubs with decorative bark, such as birch or dogwood, or with acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons or azaleas. It brings a touch of exoticism and colour to the garden.
