Sorbus aucuparia Autumn Spire, a very decorative small tree.

A small, elegant tree with a columnar habit, the Sorbus aucuparia Autumn Spire is a variety of rowan, compact and robust, very decorative in spring. It is above all the flamboyant colour of its autumn foliage and the profusion of its orange-yellow fruits which make it attractive.

Very hardy (up to -20° C), the Mountain ash Autumn Spire can reach 4 m in height and 1 m in width. Long leaves, composed of several elongated, finely toothed leaflets, appear in spring. Dark green in colour, they take on magnificent orange and purple-red hues in the fall. Flowering takes place from May until June. The Sorbus aucuparia Autumn Spire is then covered with small white flowers grouped in large corymbs. They are followed, in summer, by small fleshy, orange berries, called “sorbes”, a real treat for birds. These fruits persist into winter.

Not very demanding, the Sorbus aucuparia Autumn Spire tolerates all types of soil, even poor ones, provided that they are fresh, well drained, not too dry or waterlogged. It appreciates a sunny exposure or partial shade.

A small variety, the Mountain ash Autumn Spire is suitable for small spaces. Planted alone or in a free hedge, its warm autumnal colours and orange berries which last a long time on the tree will brighten up your garden for several months.
