Description
The Quercus frainetto or Hungarian oak is a majestic tree in every respect, but it is especially remarkable for the beauty of its foliage. At 20 cm long and 7 to 12 cm wide, its leaves are among the largest of their kind. Deeply cut, they have deep and regular lobes, themselves split into small toothed lobes. Dark green on top, whitish and tomentous on the reverse, they are shiny which gives them a lustrous and leathery appearance. When autumn comes and the time for them to fall, they delight you one last time with a yellow to brown hue which, in the sun, lights up with a beautiful golden glow.
With its average height of 20 to 25 meters, the Quercus frainetto is easily spotted thanks to its superb round silhouette and its particularly short trunk with finely grooved bark.
Flowering is in spring (May) and consists of pretty golden catkins of approximately 7 to 10 cm. Ripe in autumn, the fruits are acorns of 1 to 2 cm, grouped by 2 to 5, carried by small cupules with contiguous scales. They are a godsend for birds and rodents who, moreover, find an irreplaceable protective shelter in this tree.
Planting a Hungarian oak is therefore an action that matters for biodiversity.
Hardy up to -23°C and fast growing, this oak prefers rich, clayey and loamy soils, but can tolerate dry or humid soil.
It is a wind-resistant tree which, in addition to its legendary aesthetic, offers an intimate and shaded space ideal for moments of relaxation and sharing with family.
The Hungarian oak appreciates full sun and is suitable for free hedges. In isolation, it displays all its majesty and we can see better why it is called “king of trees”.
