Castanea sativa Aspleniifolia or Sweet chestnut Aspleniifolia is a deciduous tree much sought after for the singular beauty of its laciniated and luxuriant foliage.

From linear to oblong, the leaves are very elongated and narrow. They are 10 to 18 cm long. Deeply cut and very toothed, they have an irregular appearance that gives the whole tree its special charm. Dark green and shiny, the leaves are sometimes variegated with light green or yellow spots, which give them a very attractive marbled appearance. When young, the leaves of Castanea sativa Aspleniifolia are hairy below.

Flowering monoecious of Sweet chestnut Aspleniifolia takes place in June/July. The flowers are cream or pale yellow. They are unremarkable individually, but their arrangement in 20 cm clusters along the branches has an aesthetic effect that does not leave anyone indifferent. Very fragrant and melliferous, they attract both bees and butterflies.

Flowering is followed by fruits which reach maturity between late September and early October. These are small spherical and spiny fruits containing between 2 and 3 seeds or chestnuts. These fruits are decorative and too small to eat.

Castanea sativa Aspleniifolia reaches 15 to 20 m in height in adulthood for a spread of 10 to 15 m, it is hardy down to -23°C. It is a hardy, undemanding tree that enjoys full sun and thrives in deep, loose, slightly acidic soils.

Isolated or in beds, the original look of Sweet chestnut Aspleniifolia will always make you take a seductive break during your walks in the countryside.
