Zanthoxylum Schinifolium Diable Rouge or Mastic-leaf prickly ash Diable Rouge is a rare and almost impossible to find cultivar, a variant of the Chinese Pepper Tree. Its dark purple foliage is finely cut and fragrant, remaining purple throughout the season but tends to green if exposed to too much shade. Its bark is dark maroon brown and its young stems bright purple.

The monoecious flowering of the Mastic-leaf prickly ash Diable Rouge occurs in June and July in compact clusters on the branches of the year, of small flowers in a green-brown bouquet. These are followed by round, flat berries measuring around 3 mm, known as Sansho pepper. They are harvested in early autumn and, once dried, only the bark is recovered and ground, giving off lemongrass and citrus aromas. This pepper is mainly grown in Japan to enhance cooking. The black seed beneath the bark can be saved for sowing to produce new plants.

Young plants of Zanthoxylum Schinifolium Diable Rouge have flat thorns on both sides of the stems, which develop into bumps on the trunk and branches with age. This small deciduous tree with a spreading habit will reach a maximum height of 3.50 m when fully grown, with a spread of 3 m. It is hardy, tolerating temperatures of -15 to -18 °C, but young trees need to be protected in winter for a few years with a good mulch and winter fleece. It thrives in any type of soil with a neutral pH level, provided it is well drained. It tolerates drought very well.

Whether planted alone or as a defensive hedge, the Mastic-leaf prickly ash Diable Rouge will look wonderful in your garden.
