Sessile Oak
Quercus petraea
Description
The Sessile Oak or Quercus petraea is a very majestic species of tree of European origin that is abundant in our lands: it is the emblematic tree of our forests! Traditionally cultivated for its wood, it is very resistant to the cold (up to -28 °C) and can live up to 600 years: it is a choice ally for the sustainable development of a spacious exterior!
The Sessile Oak is a very hardy and demanding tree, which can grace forests, meadows, parks and gardens with its monumental size, reaching up to 40 meters in height, 25 meters in width and a trunk circumference of over 5 meters! The tree has an upright habit, soft green deciduous foliage and an initially smooth trunk that develops superficial grooves over the years. It reaches maturity at around 60 years of age, at which time it starts to bear fruit. Its ovoid acorns are gathered in clusters on the branches and do not have marked peduncles: they are sessile, a particularity of this species, which is the origin of its name.
The Quercus petraea adapts easily to various environments, from the plains to the mountains: it appreciates a semi-shaded location in slightly acidic, poor, rather dry and above all well-drained soil. Planting in the autumn requires prior preparation of the hole to remove plant debris or stones and to provide an organic mixture to promote its growth. The Sessile Oak must be tended for the first three years to guide its development and protect it from bad weather. Watering should be generous at the time of planting and very regular during the first three dry periods to ensure good rooting.
