Description
Native to Japan, the Chaenomeles superba Pink Lady or Japanese Quince Pink Lady is a small deciduous, thorny, bushy shrub with a spreading habit. It stands out for its abundant early spring flowering, appearing before the foliage. Indeed, from the end of February to April, on the bare branches of the previous year, many pink honey flowers bloom. They are followed by globular fruits of yellow colour, resembling small apples, very decorative and very fragrant, edible when cooked. These fruits will remain in place after the leaves have fallen for much of the winter.
Vigorous and perfectly resistant, it resists cold down to -25 °C, the Japanese Quince Pink Lady is easy to grow. It adapts to any type of soil, cool and well drained, located in the sun or in partial shade. From a height of 1 m to 1.50 m for a spread of 1.50 m, it is suitable for clumps, isolated or low hedges. After flowering, it is useful to prune the shoots that have bloomed.
The delicate and vibrant flowers of Chaenomeles superba Pink Lady will wake up your garden from the end of February. In the fall, you will also enjoy its fragrant fruits, with which you will make delicious jams and jellies.
