Maculata Thorny silverberry
Elaeagnus Pungens Maculata
Description
Elaeagnus pungens maculata or Maculata Thorny silverberry is a magnificent shrub, native to China and Japan. Its tough, dense and persistent foliage on thorny branches, is bright yellow edged with dark green, silvery on the reverse, providing a bright and elegant contrast.
Rapidly growing, it has a very branched habit and can reach 4 meters in height and wingspan. Planted as a hedge, it creates a thick screen and effective protection against the wind and spray, it is also the ideal shrub for retaining sloping soil.
Resistant, Elaeagnus pungens maculata appreciates a sunny or partial shade exposure and is resistant to frost down to -17 ° C as well as pollution and is not very sensitive to diseases and pests. Easy to live with, it adapts to dry, sandy or even very poor soils.
An autumn bloom, from September to October, adorns the Maculata Thorny silverberry with small, delicately scented, creamy-white flowers, very honey-bearing followed by red-brown berries that birds are satisfied with.
To keep this champion of hedges and flower beds compact, you can prune it in late winter and mid-summer.
Elaeagnus pungens maculata will mix brilliantly with forsythia and Buddleia to form varied and flamboyant hedges.
