Colutea arborescens or Bladder-senna, curious translucent fruits.

Colutea arborescens also called Bladder-senna is a vigorous shrub native to southern Europe, which seduces as much by its aestheticism, namely light foliage, abundant yellow papilionaceous flowers and curious pods swollen with air, than by its ease of cultivation.

Fast growing, reaching 2 to 3 m in height for a spread of 1 m, Colutea arborescens has an erect and bushy habit with many branches. Its deciduous leaves of a pretty intense green and oval shape are divided into leaflets. From May to July, the Bladder-senna offers a generous yellow bloom spotted with brown, very melliferous, reminiscent of broom. The papilionaceous flowers arranged in clusters give way to surprising and very decorative fruits, which makes it an unusual shrub. These very characteristic pods, swollen in the shape of bladders, are initially green then reddening in autumn, they become translucent when ripe.

Very resistant to drought, Colutea arborescens is satisfied with a poor, light and well-drained soil. It can even grow in difficult terrain such as an embankment or wasteland. Resistant down to -15 ° C, however, it needs heat to develop well and ideally needs to be located in the sun.

The Bladder-senna is planted in isolation, in a bed or in a hedge. It is also suitable as a container on a terrace.
