Description
The Cornus kousa Chinensis or Flowering Chinese Dogwood is a large and beautiful shrub native to China, the Chinensis differs from the cornus Kousa variety by a greater development, large leaves of 5 to 10 cm and a profusion of much larger flowers.
Able to reach a height of 7 m for 5 m of spread, it is particularly decorative by its elegant appearance, its erect then spreading habit, with horizontally tiered branches and its spectacular flowering. In May-June, elegant flowers surrounded by 4 pure white bracts of 3 to 5 cm almost entirely cover the branches of Cornus kousa Chinensis. At the end of summer, these turn into small edible red berries resembling strawberries, very popular with birds! Initially a beautiful clear green, the deciduous foliage takes, in the fall, a beautiful bright red hue turning purple.
Resistant down to -20 ° C, the Flowering Chinese Dogwood thrives in acidic, fertile and slightly moist but well-drained soil. It tolerates a sunny situation in temperate zones but prefers partial shade.
Particularly decorative by the elegance of its port and its spring and autumn colours, the Cornus kousa Chinensis deserves a special place in your garden, it will offer you alone a spectacle that will seduce you. In a shrub bed, it will happily accompany heather earth plants.
