Dogwood Midwinter Fire
Cornus sanguinea Midwinter Fire
Description
A shrub with an upright and bushy habit, native to Europe and the Netherlands, the Cornus sanguinea Midwinter Fire or Dogwood Midwinter Fire presents bare twigs with remarkable fiery colors, very bright which will illuminate your garden in the middle of winter.
The leaves turn orange-yellow in autumn and are also very decorative. When they fall, they show branches with very bright orange shades. The stems of the year evolve from yellow to orange then to a magnificent bright red in winter while the older branches remain in orange tones. From May to July, at the end of the branches, appear small white flowers in umbels, melliferous, which give way to small red berries grouped in clusters, turning to bluish black.
The Dogwood Midwinter Fire can reach 3 m in height for a spread of 1.50 m to 2 m if no pruning is carried out. Very hardy (it tolerates temperatures down to - 25 ° C) and very resistant to diseases, this dogwood is very easy to cultivate. It accepts any type of soil. You will preferably install it in moist and drained soil, exposed to the sun or partial shade. To obtain new shoots with flamboyant colors, you will prune it 20/30 cm from the ground at the end of winter.
The Cornus sanguinea Midwinter Fire is ideal in beds and in free or pruned hedges, to which it offers its magnificent winter adornment.
