The lilac is a vigorous shrub native to southeastern Europe and the Near East.
It has a reputation for scenting gardens with its highly fragrant flowers.
Syringa vulgaris can grow up to 5 to 6 metres in height when fully grown and can spread from 2.5 to 4 metres. It has an upright habit.
The leaves are deciduous, medium-green and have an attractive heart shape. It grows quickly, especially if planted in rich, well-drained soil and in sunny or semi-shaded areas.
Lilac blooms in April and May. From this time onwards, it gives off an abundance of very pleasant fragrance. Its flowers are gathered in luxuriant clusters of a beautiful blue-mauve colour. They form beautiful bouquets and are also very popular with butterflies.
The lilac is a robust and vigorous shrub that can withstand temperatures down to -25 degrees.
It is very easy to grow and is a must for a traditional, open, fragrant garden. It is versatile and can be planted as an isolated plant or in a flowering hedge, alongside Forsythia, Deutzia, in a mixture with Syringa Madame Lemoine or eve Mock Orange for example.
