Description
Syringa Microphylla Superba or Littleleaf Lilac is a shrub native to China and Korea. This variety has a very compact, bushy habit, with medium green, round, pointed leaves that are smaller than those of the common Lilac. It is a very decorative plant that blooms for a large part of the year: a first flowering appears from April to June, followed by a second from October to December. Its deep pink to mauve flower buds open into irregular, drooping panicles of pure pink inflorescences that are highly fragrant and melliferous.
The Littleleaf Lilac is an ideal shrub to decorate a small garden, with its dense foliage and 6 cm flowers grouped in clusters. When fully grown, it measures on average 1.5 to 2 metres in height for the same girth. Easy to grow and hardy (-25 °C to -29 °C), it prefers to be planted in full sun in slightly chalky, cool, draining soil and does not like acidic soil.
Syringa Microphylla Superba is easy to care for: it is advisable to mulch the base to maintain humidity and to ensure regular watering in dry periods. Once well established, it is self-sufficient and requires little water. It is not necessary to prune it, simply cut the flowering branches regularly, which will make superb bouquets, and remove the faded flowers as they come up. It is advisable to avoid pruning too severely, which could tire the shrub and reduce the next flowering season.
