Description
Cotinus coggygria, also known as the Smoke tree, is a bushy shrub native to Southern Europe and China.
Cotinus coggygria is distinguished by its rounded leaves, which range from green to purple depending on the variety. The deciduous foliage turns a beautiful orange in the autumn. The flowering period in May and June is also remarkable.
This shrub produces beautiful, light, airy pink inflorescences, which are very attractive. These decorative flower panicles are long-lasting and remain on the shrub throughout the summer.
Cotinus coggygria is not demanding in terms of maintenance. A little pruning to maintain its compact shape can be done during the winter. It is a strong shrub that can grow easily even in poor, chalky soils.
When fully grown, it can exceed 5 metres in height.
Very hardy, the Smoke tree can withstand frosts of up to -20 °C. It also easily withstands heat and summer droughts.
Cotinus coggygria thrives in sunny or semi-shaded locations. It can be combined with other ornamental shrubs, such as forsythia, to create beautiful colour contrasts. Other plants, such as heuchera and purple elderberry, can be added to echo the Smoke tree's stunning colours.
