Description
Ceanothus Pallidus Marie Simon, called California Lilac Marie Simon, is a flowering shrub native to North America. It is distinguished by its clusters of pink flowers which follow one another from June to September, and by its deciduous green foliage, which its dark red branches bring out well. It is a hardy plant down to -15°C which tolerates drought well and poor soils.
To cultivate Ceanothus Pallidus Marie Simon in the garden, you must choose a sunny location sheltered from cold winds. You must also provide it with well-drained, light and fresh soil, without too much limescale. It can be installed in spring or fall, taking care not to bury the crown of the plant. We water regularly the first year, then we reduce the water supply thereafter. We avoid fertilizers that are too rich in nitrogen, which promote the development of foliage to the detriment of flowering.
Ceanothus Pallidus Marie Simon is a shrub that fits easily into the garden, thanks to its compact and rounded habit, which will not exceed 1.50 m in height. It can be used in isolated, in clumps, in a free hedge or in a container on a terrace. It goes well with other perennial or shrubby plants, such as lavender, rose bushes, spireas or buddleias. To protect the California Lilac Marie Simon from the cold of winter, you can mulch the base of the plant with dead leaves or compost. It can also be covered with a winter cover if temperatures drop below -15°C. Finally, we prune the Ceanothus Pallidus Marie Simon after flowering, removing dead or damaged branches, and shortening the branches which have flowered. We avoid pruning too severely, so as not to compromise flowering the following year.
