Description
Snowball tree or Viburnum opulus Roseum, is a deciduous shrub. It is native to Europe, North Africa and North America, where it grows in damp woods and marshes. It has been cultivated since the 16th century for its spectacular and decorative flowering.
The Snowball tree's main attraction is its white ball flowers, which bloom from May to June. They are composed of flowers 0.5 to 1 cm in diameter, which can sometimes turn pink. They form spherical cymes 5 to 8 cm in diameter, which bend the branches under their weight. They are very popular for making bouquets and floral arrangements.
Viburnum opulus Roseum is a shrub with a bushy habit, which can reach 3.5 to 4 m in height and 3 m in wingspan. Its leaves are 8 to 12 cm long, a little downy and cut into 3 to 5 acute lobes with serrated margins. They are dark green in summer, and take on beautiful purple colors in autumn. The fruits are red berries that are considered inedible because they contain a poisonous alkaloid. However, they have medicinal properties such as heart tonic.
Snowball tree is an easy-to-grow plant that adapts to any type of soil, even limestone, as long as it is cool and moist. It prefers a sunny or semi-shaded position, but tolerates shade well. It is very hardy, and resists temperatures down to -34°C. It does not need any particular pruning, except to remove dead or damaged branches after flowering. It is propagated by cuttings or by layering.
Viburnum opulus Roseum is an ideal plant for free or flowering hedges, shrub beds or isolated in small gardens. It brings a romantic and rural touch to the landscape, with its white pompom flowers reminiscent of snow. It also attracts birds and pollinating insects. It blends well with other spring or fall flowering shrubs, such as lilacs, forsythias or spirea.
