Poncirus trifoliata 'Kryder' or Trifoliate Orange Kryder is a fruit shrub appreciated for its resistance and beauty. Native to Asia, this hardy citrus tree can withstand temperatures ranging from -15 to -20°C, which sets it apart from its more tropical cousins. With its deciduous, trilobed, shiny dark green foliage, which turns bright yellow in autumn, it offers a visual spectacle all year round. In May/June, it is adorned with fragrant white flowers, attracting pollinators and bringing a touch of freshness to the garden.

The fruits of Poncirus trifoliata 'Kryder', although inedible raw due to their bitterness, are highly prized for making marmalades and other culinary preparations. They are small (about 4 to 6 cm), globose, with a thick, waxy and rough skin, and contain many seeds. Their harvest is from October to April, when the fruits reach a bright yellow-orange colour, these can remain in place in winter, which is very decorative on the bare wood of very dark colour.

For the culture, the Poncirus trifoliata 'Kryder' is not very demanding. It prefers a well-drained soil, slightly acidic to neutral, but adapts easily to all soils. A sun / partial shade exposure is ideal for good development and a beautiful fruiting. The care to be given is minimal, limited to regular watering during periods of drought and balanced fertilization in early spring.

The pruning of the Trifoliate Orange Kryder is not necessary, but if you want to contain it, it must be done with care to maintain its shape and encourage the production of fruits. It is advisable to prune after the fruit harvest, in late autumn or winter, by removing dead or poorly placed branches and aerating the centre of the plant.

With a bushy habit when young that will develop into an umbrella shape, it will reach a height of 3 to 5 metres and a similar width when mature. Poncirus trifoliata 'Kryder' is perfect for creating a focal point in a garden or as part of a defensive hedge due to its robust thorns. Its exceptional hardiness makes it an ideal choice for gardeners looking to add an element of interest to the garden.
