Description
Calycanthus raulstonii Venus or Sweetshrub Venus is a flowering shrub native to North America, resulting from the cross between Calycanthus floridus and Sinocalycanthus chinensis. It is distinguished by its large white and fragrant flowers, which appear from May to September and are reminiscent of those of the magnolia. Its leaves are deciduous, oval and dark green, and take on beautiful yellow hues in the fall. Calycanthus raulstonii Venus reaches around 2 meters in height and width, and forms a dense, rounded bush.
To cultivate Calycanthus raulstonii Venus in the garden, you must choose a sunny or partial shade location, sheltered from cold winds. It appreciates fertile, fresh, well-drained and slightly acidic soil. It tolerates drought well once established, but it must be watered regularly during the first years. It is not very demanding in terms of fertilization, but you can provide it with compost or decomposed manure in spring. It resists diseases and parasites well, but you have to watch out for attacks by aphids or mealybugs.
Calycanthus raulstonii Venus is a shrub that fits easily into flowerbeds, free hedges or borders. It can also be grown in a pot on a terrace or balcony. Its flowers are very decorative and give off a pleasant scent. They also attract pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies. To promote flowering, Sweetshrub Venus should be pruned in late winter or early spring, removing dead, diseased or unbalanced branches, and shortening the previous year's shoots. Calycanthus raulstonii Venus is hardy down to around -15°C, but it must be protected from frost by mulching its base or covering it with a winter cover if temperatures drop lower.
