Description
Vitex agnus castus Latifolia, a generous sustained blue-purple bloom
A mediterranean ornamental shrub, Vitex agnus castus Latifolia, also called Broad-leaved Chaste Tree, is distinguished by its superb and generous summer flowering, of a dark blue-violet colour. It is a variety of Vitex with large leaves, more robust and more hardy than the classic species.
Able to reach a height of 2 to 3 m for the same width, Vitex agnus castus Latifolia is characterized by a bushy and rounded habit. Its flowering takes place from the end of July to the end of September on the shoots of the year. Abundant spikes 20 to 30 cm long, topped with deep violet-blue flowers, appear. Very melliferous, they are a delight for insects. They are followed by small dark red fruits which persist until winter. Its solid and flexible stems carry webbed leaves, formed from 5 to 7 leaflets, green with a gray underside then yellow in autumn. They give off a peppery smell when crushed, hence their name Broad-leaved Chaste Tree. Its branches are quadrangular.
Hardy (down to -15° C), Vitex agnus castus Latifolia can be planted in the ground. It appreciates any type of filtering soil, dry and even poor, and exposure to full sun. Easy to grow, it tolerates drought, spray and wind.
The Vitex agnus castus Latifolia is ideal for forming flowering hedges and for dressing a background of a flowerbed, but it also looks great, isolated on a lawn. Prune Broad-leaved Chaste Tree at the end of winter to give it a nice shape and promote good flowering, and about 15 cm above the ground to keep a lower, stockier shrub. Sensitive to spring frosts.
