Perovskia atripicifolia Blue Spire, a hardy shrub for dry gardens

Commonly called "Russian Sage Blue Spire", the Perovskia atriplicifolia Blue Spire is a hardy bush native to Asia and Tibet. Easy to live with, it is ideal for dry gardens. Very decorative, it is distinguished by a remarkable lavender blue bloom and very jagged foliage with a delicate scent of sage.

Perennial often compared to lavender, the Russian Sage Blue Spire forms, when mature, a bush 1.20 m high and 1 m wide, with whitish stems, as if floured. From July to September, a multitude of light flowers appear, in the form of small tubes arranged in spikes 30 to 40 cm long, much larger than those of the standard variety. The leaves, very finely cut, silver gray in colour, bring out their bright lavender blue hue.

Perovskia atriplicifolia Blue Spire adapts to any type of light, well-drained soil. It supports calcareous, dry and stony soils, appreciates the sun and the heat. It is a shrub which, once well established, hardly needs any water. Rapidly growing, it is resistant to drought, cold and disease. Russian Sage Blue Spire is low maintenance, just prune it in late winter (February-March) to two eyes above old wood.

To give structure to your beds and your rockeries, you can combine Perovskia atriplicifolia Blue Spire with other perennials, shrubs or rockery plants. It also behaves very well in pots. For borders, plant every 60 cm. Does not support frequent watering or fertilizers. Throughout the summer, you will enjoy its long flowering.
