Laurustinus giganteum (Viburnum tinus giganteum) is a real gem for any garden. An evergreen shrub, it offers a dazzling winter bloom. Its clusters of white to pinkish-white flowers bloom in the heart of winter. Its name 'giganteum' is no coincidence: this variety of shrub can reach a height of 2.50 to 3 m and spread over 2 to 2.50 m.

Description

The flowering of Laurustinus giganteum appears on the shoots of the year, around October/November, and continues until April. Corymbs of 8 to 10 cm with small pinkish white flowers with 5 lobes, preceded by pink flower buds, they are weakly scented and visited by foraging insects.

Viburnum tinus giganteum is an evergreen shrub with a bushy habit, its 9 to 10 cm, dark green oval leaves are shiny. Its young shoots are reddish and hairy. It is an excellent choice for trimmed or free hedges or as a background shrub in a bed, to which it adds a vertical dimension. Hardy, it is able to withstand temperatures ranging from -10° to -12 °C. Finally, in September, it produces blue-black berries that add extra interest after flowering. These are very popular with birds.

Growing tips

Viburnum tinus giganteum is an easy-to-grow plant. It prefers well-drained soil, but can adapt to a variety of soil types, including clay, sandy, and loamy soils. It can be placed in full sun or partial shade, which makes it very flexible in terms of location. In addition, it tolerates drought quite well. To encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering, it is recommended that faded flowers be removed as they occur, and the shrub pruned after flowering to maintain an attractive shape. Pruning at this time will suppress the appearance of fruit following flowering. More severe pruning will not harm this shrub, as it restarts from the stump without problems.

All in all, Laurustinus giganteum is a fantastic addition to any garden. Its evergreen foliage, winter flowering, and ease of cultivation make it a popular choice among gardeners of all skill levels. So why not add this beautiful subject to your collection?
