Description
Staphylea Pinnata, also known as European bladdernut, is a small tree or large shrub native to Europe and Asia.
Flowering of Staphylea pinnata occurs in May and is very abundant. The flowers are creamy white, slightly shaded with pink. They are very fragrant, with notes of coconut, and are melliferous. Flowering is followed by fruits, papery capsules containing edible seeds which are roasted and resemble pistachios, they mature in September/October.
The foliage of European bladdernut resembles that of elderberry, with leaves bright green composed of 5 to 9 leaflets. It has a rapid growth in the first years, this slows down over time.
Staphylea pinnata is a shrub that can reach a height of 4 m on a spread of 4 m. It resists negative temperatures down to -25° C. It prefers to be planted in the sun, but also tolerates partial shade. Its habit is bushy and spreading, which makes it an excellent choice for use in beds or as an isolated plant.
Resistance to disease and insect pests is also an asset of European bladdernut. It is very robust. It can be planted in all types of soil. To keep the soil cool, it is advisable to mulch its foot. To maintain a beautiful habit for this shrub, it is suggested to cut back the deflowered branches in summer.
Staphylea pinnata enjoys the company of other plants such as elderberries and hazelnuts. It enters into the composition of beds or hedges.
