Lilac Amethyst
Syringa vulgaris Amethyst
Description
Syringa vulgaris Amethyst or Lilac Amethyst, a generous flowering.
Syringa vulgaris Amethyst or Lilac Amethyst is an uncommon, particularly floriferous variety of lilac. From April to May, the purple flower buds of Syringa Amethyst appear, then they open out into single flowers gathered in dense pyramidal clusters, of an amethyst blue colour nuanced with pink reflections, exhaling an intense fragrance. Its young deciduous foliage is tinged with ochre, its large dark green leaves are heart-shaped.
The Lilac Amethyst grows in any type of soil, even limestone, cool and well drained, preferably exposed to the sun. Shrub with a bushy and dense habit, it can reach a height of 2.50 to 4 m for a spread of 2 to 3 m. Very hardy (it withstands temperatures down to -20 °C) and undemanding, it is also very resistant to disease.
Easy to grow, it requires little maintenance. You will remove the faded flowers and prune the branches that have flowered at the end of winter to promote the birth of new shoots. The generosity of the flowering Syringa vulgaris Amethyst will bring colour to your garden. You will plant it in isolated, but it will also be suitable in beds and in hedges, associated with other flowering shrubs. By cutting flowering branches of Lilac Amethyst, you can create magnificent bouquets that will pleasantly perfume your interior.
