Garrya thuretii or Silk Tassel Bush is an evergreen shrub with a bushy habit producing a very decorative flowering at the end of winter, with long hanging catkins of 7 to 10 cm, yellowish to greyish.

Its persistent and leathery foliage is composed of leaves from 6 to 10 cm long and 3 cm wide, dark green with a lighter underside, smooth, oval and pointed. In February and March, its flowers appear, which are remarkably well enhanced by the dark green foliage.

The fast-growing Silk Tassel Bush will reach a height of 4 m and a spread of 5 m. This shrub is resistant to -10°C and is best suited to temperate regions, the southern coast or Brittany, both of which enjoy a relatively mild climate. The Garrya thuretii can withstand wind and sea spray.

Planted in veiled sun or light shade, it adapts to all types of soil. Ideal as a windbreak hedge or placed against a wall where it will benefit from the reverberation of the heat. For colder regions, planting in a large pot is possible, in which case good watering is recommended as well as frost-free wintering in a cool, light room.
