Description
Ceanothus griseus Yankee Point, a cascade of blue flowers in spring.
A magnificent ground cover shrub with a spreading habit, Ceanothus griseus Yankee Point, more commonly known as Californian lilac Yankee Point, is a variety resulting from a cross between Ceanothus griseus var. horizontalis and Ceanothus griseus. It has a long and spectacular blue spring flowering and bright green foliage. This Ceanothus develops branches that spread out in successive layers to form a low bush 1 m high and 3 m wide.
From April to June, Ceanothus griseus Yankee Point is covered with small clusters of very bright blue, pleasantly scented flowers. They are very melliferous and attract foraging insects. They are enhanced by an evergreen foliage composed of small oval leaves of a beautiful shiny dark green with pronounced veins.
The Californian lilac Yankee Point is not very demanding, but it can be grown in ordinary stony but well-drained soil and requires a sunny or semi-shaded position. This shrub is very resistant to drought and disease but is rather cold, so it is best to reserve it for milder and more temperate climates in the south, such as the Mediterranean regions, as it cannot withstand frosts above -8 to -10°C, and its foliage is already affected at -5°C. Elsewhere, it is very well suited to pot cultivation, simply winter it out of the frost in a cool room. It is easy to maintain, simply prune the dead wood.
The Ceanothus griseus Yankee Point is perfect for dressing up a slope or covering a rockery. Planted in isolated, it will amaze you with the generosity of its spring flowers.
