Japanese Maple Katsura
Acer Palmatum Katsura
Description
The Acer Palmatum Katsura or Japanese Maple Katsura is a variety native to China and Japan. Its main asset is its foliage, which offers a magnificent range of colours throughout the seasons: orange-yellow bordered with orange-red at bud break, then orange turning green in summer and finally yellow, orange and red in autumn. It is a very decorative and elegant small tree, ideal for an ornamental garden or a bed.
The Japanese Katsura Maple has a dense, somewhat upright and bushy habit. Its leaves are deciduous and opposite, with elongated, pointed lobes that are slightly toothed at the edges. A modest flowering appears in May-June and is followed by a very decorative fruiting of samaras, which are about 3 cm long. It has a good spread, which it easily attains thanks to its rapid growth: at maturity it is 2.5 to 3 metres high with a circumference of 2 metres.
Resistant, it can withstand temperatures of -17 to -20°C. It is recommended to place the Acer Palmatum Katsura in a sunny or semi-shaded area with a humus and acid soil. It can also be grown in pots to enhance a terrace, balcony or patio. Sensitive to drought and cold winds, it should be sheltered from the weather and watered regularly to keep the soil cool.
