Description
The Beauty Bush or Kolkwitzia amabilis deserves its name: particularly floriferous, it offers a superb show in the summer, when its supple, drooping stems are covered with cascading flowers with light pink petals. Easy to grow, this very decorative shrub is resistant to disease and insect pests, and is also very drought resistant.
Native to China, Kolkwitzia amabilis is a hardy species that can withstand cold temperatures down to -29°C. When mature, after six years, it reaches 2 to 3 metres in height and 2 to 2.5 metres in width. It has small, pointed, oval, fluffy leaves of an attractive, bright green colour and a beautiful spreading habit. The spectacular flowering of the Beauty Bush takes place from May to June. The flowers, which start out as dark pink buds, bloom into 3 cm long bell-shaped, pink flowers that fade over time. Melliferous, they are a delight to bees and add a romantic touch to the garden
Kolkwitzia amabilis is undemanding and can be planted in all types of soil, in clumps, in hedges or as an isolated plant in sun or light shade. Pruning is carried out once the flowering period is over (early July), by shortening the branches by two thirds and thinning out the centre. Flowering takes place on the previous year's wood.
