Description
Physocarpus opulifolius Little Joker®: a very decorative little bush.
The Ninebark Little Joker is a shrub native to the Netherlands. It is small in size and ideal for small gardens and for growing in pots. Its foliage is very brightly coloured: orange at bud break, the leaves turn burgundy, then bronze green in summer and finally golden in autumn. The flowering in melliferous corymbs, from May to the beginning of July, is purple in bud and then pinkish-white when it blooms.
Physocarpus opulifolius Little Joker® is slow growing: it reaches a maximum height of 60 centimetres with a spread of 50 centimetres. It is a small, highly branched shrub with deciduous, erect and very dense foliage. Its finely cut leaves are smaller than the average for the species (4 cm long). The inflorescences are in corymbs of small flowers, followed by attractive, decorative fruits. The flowers are not fragrant but are very melliferous. The stems of this shrub are, like the leaves, coloured: a real firework display of shimmering colours.
Ninebark Little Joker is a hardy, disease-resistant shrub that is easy to grow and can withstand temperatures as low as -30°C. It thrives in all types of soil, as long as it is rich and cool. It can be planted in any position, including in the shade, but its spectacular colours will be more pronounced if it is planted in the sun. Aeration pruning after the first flowering will encourage new flowers. The Ninebark Little Joker can be planted in rock gardens, in beds, in low hedges, as well as in pots on a terrace or balcony.
