The Narrow-leaved mock privet , or Phillyrea angustifolia, is also known as the wild olive tree. It is a hardy shrub, tolerant not only to pollution but also to drought once well established. It can withstand strong winds as well as sea spray and salt. It is ideal for use in seaside gardens as a windbreak, or as a stand-alone plant to create a Mediterranean atmosphere.
Phillyrea angustifolia, a small shrub from the East and the Mediterranean with a bushy habit, can reach 2 to 3 m in height when fully grown and almost as wide. It has evergreen foliage with fine, leathery leaves 3 to 8 cm long, bronze to dark green. Its small, inconspicuous flowers, which bloom from March to May, are creamy white to greenish, fragrant and melliferous. The fruits are small and bluish-black. They are not edible but are a treat for birds in autumn.
The Narrow-leaved mock privet prefers the drained, poor and stony soils of the garrigue, but this shrub can withstand all types of soil. Phillyrea angustifolia likes sunny exposures but can also tolerate part shade. It is a hardy shrub that can withstand harsh winters and temperatures as low as -16°C. It is best planted in spring or autumn. It is recommended to water well the first two years to encourage rooting. If the shrubs are planted in a hedge, space them 2 metres apart. Pruning is possible after flowering.
