Rue
Ruta graveolens
Description
Rue, or ruta graveolens, is an aromatic plant that forms a 70 cm shrub when mature, with bouquets of small yellow flowers at the end of its stems from June to September. The leaves have a powerful, musky and even spicy aroma.
Sow rue in a greenhouse in spring (March-April). When the plants reach 5 cm, plant them in the ground, spacing each plant 50 to 60 cm apart. Its strong odour makes it repellent to insects, especially aphids. It will therefore have a special place at the edge of the vegetable garden.
Rue can be harvested from the second year of growth. The leaves can then be picked all year round. They are used in cooking in small quantities to add bitterness, in sauces for example, and the young leaves to season game and meats, but they are mainly used for the preparation of alcoholic drinks such as Grappa.
