Sweet pepperbush Ruby Spice
Clethra alnifolia Ruby Spice
Description
Native to the Northeastern United States, Clethra alnifolia Ruby Spice or Sweet pepperbush Ruby Spice is a deciduous shrub remarkable for its abundant and long summer flowering, very fragrant, dark pink and for the magnificent orange-yellow coloring that takes its foliage in autumn.
Easy to grow and very hardy (- 25 ° C), Clethra alnifolia Ruby Spice, a compact variety with a bushy habit, reaches 1 m to 1.50 m in height for a spread of 1 m to 1.20 m. Plant it in a mass of heather soil associated with camellias or rhododendrons, a hedge or an undergrowth. You can also grow it in a pot.
From July to September, it is covered with numerous small dark pink flowers arranged in spikes, fragrant and honey-bearing, the color of which does not fade in the sun. Its tender green leaves and glossy in summer take on a splendid autumnal hue of golden to orange.
The Sweet pepperbush Ruby Spice is best grown in partial shade, in acidic, fertile, humus-enriched, cool and well-drained soil. After flowering, maintenance pruning is sufficient, simply remove the faded flowers.
You will enjoy the summer flowering of your Clethra alnifolia Ruby Spice for a long time and its bronze fall colors which will bring luminosity to the semi-shaded corners of your garden.
