Description
Hydrangea Macrophylla Blaumeise, more commonly known as Blaumeise Lacecap Hydrangea, is an ornamental shrub prized for its spectacular flowering and its ability to change colour depending on the pH of the soil. Indeed, its large inflorescences, which can be blue or pink, are composed of flat flowers called corymbs, which bloom generously from July to September. These 15 cm diameter corymbs, made up of small sterile flower buds in the center, are lined with four-petaled flowers, are eye-catching and add a splash of vibrant colour to the garden. The chameleon-like appearance of Blaumeise Lacecap Hydrangea is arguably its greatest appeal, offering a colour palette that varies from deep blue in acidic soils (heather and alumina sulfate) to a soft pink in alkaline soils.
Blaumeise Lacecap Hydrangea features dense, dark green serrated foliage, which forms a striking contrast with its colourful flowers. The rounded shrub generally reaches a height of 1.50 meters by 1.80 meters in spread, making it an ideal choice for borders, flower beds, flowering hedges or as an isolated specimen. Its hardiness is remarkable, since it can withstand temperatures down to -24°C. The ideal exposure for the Hydrangea Macrophylla Blaumeise is a semi-shaded area, where it can benefit from diffused light without being exposed directly to the scorching rays of the afternoon sun.
For planting and growing Blaumeise Lacecap Hydrangea, it is advisable to choose a location that meets its needs in terms of exposure and soil type. Rich, acidic soil that is well drained and kept moist is ideal. To encourage abundant flowering, it is recommended to prune the oldest branches by a third in March-April, which will encourage the growth of new stems. Finally, the ideal location in the garden for this Hydrangea would be a place with an east or north-east exposure, to benefit from the morning sun and afternoon shade, which will favour optimal flowering and good health in general of the shrub.
