Description
Cephalanthus occidentalis, also known as Buttonbush, is a beautiful shrub that can add a touch of elegance to any garden. This shrub is native to North America.
Buttonbush has a remarkable and very unusual flowering habit that makes it a great garden attraction, spiky spheres measuring 2 to 3.5 cm in diameter, consisting of a multitude of white to creamy yellow four-petalled tubular flowers. They bloom from July to October and are followed by winter-long capsules containing the seeds. Melliferous and nectariferous, the flowers of Cephalanthus occidentalis are attractive to bees and other foraging insects.
The leaves are 10 cm long and 5 cm wide, with wavy margins and well-defined veins. The midrib and petiole are slightly purple. The leaves turn golden yellow in autumn and then orange before falling off in winter.
Buttonbush is a fast-growing, bushy shrub that can reach a height of 2 to 3 meters and a spread of 3 to 5 meters. It is hardy and can withstand extreme cold down to -28 °C, and is not prone to disease.
Cephalanthus occidentalis should be planted in the sun for a more generous flowering, but also grows well in the shade or semi-shade. The plant should be planted in acidic, moist, but well-drained soil. It is best planted in a damp area or by a pond, at the bottom of a bed or in a free hedge, as it does not tolerate drought very well. It can also be grown in a pot.
Maintenance pruning can be done in March-April.
