Black mondo grass
Ophiopogon planiscapus Niger
Description
Originally from Japan, Ophiopogon planiscapus Niger or Black mondo grass is an ornamental perennial plant whose foliage reminiscent of a grass surprises with its finesse and its black color rare in our gardens. The narrow, evergreen leaves develop in dense clumps reaching 0.25 cm in height with a spread of 0.30 cm.
In July-August, small pale pink star flowers appear together in clusters on small stems of about 15 cm like the lily of the valley. Small bluish black berries 1 cm in diameter from these flowers in autumn.
Robust and hardy, the Black mondo grass is an easy to grow plant that is resistant to cold down to -23 ° C. She appreciates fresh, well-drained soil enriched with compost and slightly acidic. She is happy in all situations, even if she prefers shade or partial shade. You will plant Ophiopogon planiscapus Niger in the spring, in close rows (roughly 9 plants per m²) to quickly obtain a compact ground cover.
Ideal for rocky gardens where its dark and shiny foliage contrasts beautifully with gray or silver foliage, Ophiopogon planiscapus Niger is an equally elegant addition to your flower beds and borders in the company of flowering plants. It can also be grown in a pot and be part of the composition of a planter.
