Bear's breeches
Acanthus mollis
Description
Acanthus mollis – Bear's breeches
Origins and characteristics
Acanthus mollis is a species native to southern Europe, particularly common in regions surrounding the Mediterranean. It has been cultivated since ancient times for its remarkable aesthetic qualities. This herbaceous perennial develops a large clump of deeply cut, dark green, glossy basal leaves. From spring onwards, it produces tall, 1 m tall flower stems bearing white and pinkish flowers, subtly enveloped in purple bracts.
Description and characteristics
Bear's breeches can reach up to 1.2 to 1.5 m in height when flowering, with a spread of 80 cm to 1 m.
Its leaves are long (up to 60 cm), soft to the touch, but very striking, making it a perfect plant for flowerbeds or bordering paths. The flowers appear in July, sometimes later depending on the climate, and attract numerous pollinating insects.

● Mature height: 1.2 to 1.5 m
● Foliage: Evergreen or semi-evergreen (depending on the climate)

Growing Conditions
Position:
Bear's breeches prefers a sunny to partially shaded location, especially in regions with very hot summers.

Care
Watering:
Moderate. Regular watering is necessary during establishment, after which it is drought-resistant.
Pruning:
Remove faded flower stems and damaged leaves in late summer or winter.
Propagation:
By dividing clumps or sowing in spring, but be careful, the plant can spread on its own over time.
Garden Uses
Bear's Breeches are perfect for:
● Light shade beds
● Mediterranean gardens
● Low-maintenance areas, as it requires little care
● Historic or classical gardens (in keeping with its ancient heritage)
Protection and Precautions
● Pests: Not very susceptible to diseases or pests, but the young leaves can be attacked by slugs in spring.
● Invasiveness: Can become somewhat invasive if the soil is too favourable; monitor its spread.
● Spiky foliage: Some varieties or older forms may have stiffer leaves with slightly thorny margins.
Planting and care tips
● Work the soil thoroughly before planting.
● Mulch in summer to keep it cool.
● Do not move the acanthus once established: it hates to be disturbed.
● For an architectural effect, plant in groups of 3 to 5 plants.
