Description
Platanus hispanica, a remarkable bark.
The Platanus hispanica or Maple-leaved plane is a majestic tree with a powerful trunk whose smooth, grey, highly decorative bark peels off in patches with age, revealing layers ranging from pale yellow to green and beige, like a mosaic. With an estimated lifespan of a thousand years, this large tree reaches an average height of 20 to 30 m and a width of 15 to 20 m. It can be pruned, even severely, to give it a parasol shape and for trellising.
The large, bright green leaves of Platanus hispanica are divided into 3 to 5 toothed lobes, resembling those of the maple tree, hence the name "Maple-leaved plane". It flowers in April-May, followed in autumn by fruits called achenes. Grouped in pairs and ovoid in shape, they are bristling with hairs and persist throughout the winter.
The Maple-leaved plane adapts to all types of deep, well-drained, cool soil. It is resistant to atmospheric pollution and can withstand cold temperatures down to -23°C.
The Platanus hispanica is mainly used as an ornamental tree in alignment at the edge of alleys or in parks.
