Description
Chimonanthus Praecox or Wintersweet is a slow growing shrub native to China. With a mature height of 2 to 2,50 meters, it is characterized by a bush with deciduous foliage and a rounded silhouette. It is also recognizable by its branched and erect habit as well as its green and elliptical leaves, which take on a beautiful yellow tint in autumn. Wintersweet is appreciated for its winter and fragrant flowers. Indeed, depending on the climate, this shrub produces hanging and fragrant flowers on its bare branches. Sulfur yellow with spots of brown or purple, these flower buds give off a pleasant honey scent.
Hardy and easy to grow, Chimonanthus Praecox is planted in autumn and spring. The soil must then be fresh, humus, drained or calcareous, tolerated with a sunny or semi-shaded exposure. The shrub also has a high tolerance for sea spray. Which makes it possible to find it everywhere in France, including by the sea.
Chimonanthus Praecox finally has great resistance to cold, up to -15°C. However, winter mulching must be carried out at the feet of young plants. This helps protect them from severe frosts. The size is optional. If necessary, the ideal would be to wait until the end of its winter flowering.
