Description
Clerodendrum bungei or Rose Glory Bower is a shrub native to China, which is distinguished by its dark pink ball-shaped flowers, very fragrant and melliferous, followed by very decorative turquoise fruiting. It can reach 1.50 to 2 meters in height and 2 m in width, and offers abundant flowering from July to October. Its large heart-shaped leaves are purple green. It is an ideal plant for creating a colourful and fragrant flowerbed, or for decorating a free hedge.
To cultivate Clerodendrum bungei in the garden, you must choose a sunny or partial shade location, sheltered from strong winds. It appreciates rich, fresh and well-drained soil, but also tolerates limestone or dry soils. The plant must be watered regularly during the growth and flowering period, without leaving the soil soggy. It is also necessary to add an organic fertilizer in spring and summer, to promote the vigor and flowering of the shrub.
The Clerodendrum bungei fits easily into the garden, thanks to its bushy habit and its dark green-purple foliage, which contrasts with its pink flowers. It can be combined with other flowering shrubs, such as hydrangeas, lilacs or buddleias, or with perennial plants, such as asters, rudbeckias or sages. The Rose Glory Bower can also be grown in a pot, on a terrace or balcony, provided you provide it with a sufficiently wide and deep container.
The Clerodendrum bungei is a hardy shrub, but it can suffer from late frosts or harsh winters. To protect it from the cold, you must mulch the base of the shrub with dead leaves or compost, and wrap the foliage with a winter veil. If the plant has frozen, you must wait until spring to prune the dead parts and encourage regrowth. The Rose Glory Bower does not need severe pruning, just remove tangled or damaged branches after flowering.
