Description
Hovenia dulcis, more commonly known as the Japanese raisin tree, is a species of fruit tree native to East Asia. Appreciated for its ornamental appearance and its edible fruits, it is attracting growing interest among gardening and fruit tree enthusiasts.
Hovenia dulcis is a medium-growing tree that can reach a height of 10 meters at maturity. Its shape is rounded and spreading, its deciduous foliage is dark green and heart-shaped. The flowers are small and discreet, greenish-white in colour, and appear in panicles at the end of spring. It is a honey-producing species that attracts many pollinating insects.
Unlike most fruits, it is not the drupes of the Japanese raisin tree that are consumed, but rather the peduncles that develop and thicken after fertilization. These peduncles, fleshy and sweet, resemble small raisins and are very popular for their sweet and slightly acidic flavour. They are naturally rich in sugars and contain fibers.
The flowering of the Japanese raisin tree generally takes place in late spring. Fruiting follows closely, and the peduncles begin to swell and turn brown as they ripen. Harvest is in the fall, when the peduncles are tender and sweet or fallen to the ground. They can be eaten fresh, dried or used to prepare jams, jellies or liqueurs.
The Japanese raisin tree is a hardy tree that adapts to different types of soil, provided that they are well drained. It prefers sunny or semi-shaded exposures.
-Watering: when the plants are still young, they require more regular watering, to be monitored during periods of drought. Adult, Hovenia dulcis is more resistant to periods of drought.
-Pruning: pruning is not essential, but it can be done at the end of winter to give the tree a more compact shape.
-Fertilization: adding compost or organic fertilizer in the spring promotes growth and fruiting.
The peduncles of Hovenia dulcis are mainly eaten fresh. They can also be dried to be eaten later. Their sweet and slightly acidic flavour makes them perfect for making jams, jellies, compotes and liqueurs. They can also be used in cooking to flavour pastries or savoury dishes.
Hovenia dulcis is an original and unusual fruit tree that deserves to be better known. Its ornamental appearance, edible fruits and hardiness make it an interesting species for medium-sized gardens and orchards. If you want to add a touch of exoticism to your garden, the Japanese raisin tree is an excellent choice.
