Description
The Corylus avellana Contorta, or Twisted hazelnut tree, is an ornamental shrub which is distinguished by its shape and its beautifully tortuous branches. Its sinuous and intertwined branches form a graphic spectacle, especially in winter, when they are devoid of foliage and covered with snow or frost. In spring, they adorn themselves with long yellow catkins which announce flowering. It is an original and rustic variety that brings charm and character to the garden.
Corylus avellana Contorta belongs to the Betulaceae family. It is native to temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere and comes from a mutation of the common hazel tree. It was discovered in England around 1863. The Twisted hazelnut tree grows slowly and reaches approximately 3 meters in height and 2 meters in spread at maturity. Its foliage is deciduous, dark green, slightly curled and toothed. It takes on a beautiful golden yellow hue in the fall. Its flowers are monoecious, that is to say it has male and female flowers on the same plant. The male flowers are hanging catkins, 5 cm long, bright yellow in colour, they appear between February and March. The female flowers which appear in March-April are more discreet, reddish, located at the end of the branches. Flowering takes place before the leaves emerge in May. More decorative than fruit shrub, its fruiting is not abundant. The fruits are edible hazlnuts, enclosed in a green, hairy husk.
The Twisted hazelnut tree is easy to cultivate and adapts to all types of soil, except too dry or superficial. It prefers a sunny or partial shade exposure, but tolerates shade well. It resists temperatures down to -34°C. It does not need regular pruning, except to remove dead or damaged branches. It can be pruned after flowering to maintain its shape or reduce its volume. It can be planted alone, or it will best reveal its tortuous silhouette. But also in groups, in a free hedge or in a container on a terrace. Its branches are often used to make Easter-themed bouquets and decorations.
