Description
Cotinus Coggygria Royal Purple, also called Purple Smoketree, is an ornamental shrub that offers a spectacle of colour all year round.
Purple Smoketree gets its name from its fluffy, light inflorescences that resemble wigs. They appear in July and August and are a beautiful cloudy purple that contrasts with the foliage. This one is also remarkable: the leaves are oval and an intense dark purple. They change colour in autumn and become scarlet, flamboyant and luminous.
Cotinus Coggygria Royal Purple is a deciduous shrub that can reach 6 m in height and 5 m in spread. It has a bushy and irregular habit, sometimes wider than it is tall. It is native to Southern Europe and Asia. It flowers all summer and produces feathery panicles 25 cm long, composed of small sterile flowers whose peduncles elongate and form silky threads. These dusters are green at first, then turn purple as they dry. They persist for a long time on the plant and give a vaporous appearance to the shrub. Purple Smoketree is very hardy and tolerates temperatures down to -23 °C. It likes sun or partial shade and adapts to all types of soil, even dry, heavy or limestone.
Purple Smoketree is best planted in spring or fall, in a mixture of garden soil and well-decomposed potting soil or compost, making a hole twice as wide as the rootball. The soil must be packed tightly around the roots and watered abundantly after planting. It is also necessary to mulch the base to conserve soil moisture and protect from the cold. Cotinus Coggygria Royal Purple does not require much maintenance. You just need to remove dead or damaged branches in spring and possibly lightly prune the shrub to give it a harmonious shape. It is not necessary to fertilize it, as it prefers poor soils, which favour its flowering. It is a decorative shrub that can be used alone, in clumps, or as a free hedge. It brings a touch of colour and lightness to the garden and attracts pollinating insects.
