Description
Aronia Melanocarpa, also called Black chokeberry, is a shrub native to North America which offers multiple attractions to the garden. Its edible fruits are rich in antioxidants and have a slightly tart taste reminiscent of blackcurrant. They are appreciated by birds and can be used in jam, juice or syrup. Its deciduous leaves take on magnificent autumn colours, ranging from orange to purplish red. Its fragrant white flowers are honey-producing and attract pollinating insects.
Black chokeberry is a low-growing shrub, which reaches approximately 1.5 to 2 m in height with a spread of 1.50 m. Its shape is spreading and slightly suckering. Its bark is smooth and reddish brown. Its leaves are oval, finely toothed, shiny dark green. They measure approximately 6 cm long. The flowers appear in April-May, grouped in bouquets of more or less 20. They are white and have 5 petals and bear long stamens ending in pale pink tips. They measure approximately 1.5 cm in diameter. The fruits are round berries, 9 mm in diameter, which change from purple-green to purplish-black and shiny when ripe. They persist on the shrub for a long time if birds do not eat them.
Black chokeberry is a very hardy shrub, which resists up to -30°C. It is very little susceptible to diseases and harmful insects. It tolerates any type of soil, except too calcareous or too humid; plant it in acidic to neutral soil. It prefers a sunny or partial shade exposure, which favours its fruiting and its autumn colouring. It is planted in autumn or spring, in a fairly wide hole, because its roots are superficial. Aronia Melanocarpa waters regularly the first year, then tolerates drought well. It is pruned after flowering if necessary, to eliminate dead or unbalanced branches. It multiplies by sowing, cuttings or separation of suckers. It can be used alone, in clumps or as a free hedge. It is decorative and useful for the biodiversity of the garden.
